How Gumroad creators got its users
The product is sold to the audience the creator built beforehand. With no audience, the platform distributes nothing.
Confirmed. The team said it publicly, or the signals leave no room for doubt.
You could start this on Monday. No budget, no audience, no permission needed.
- A launch that does not start from zero
- A direct relationship that survives algorithm changes
- 12 to 36 months of publishing before launch
- Accepting that you are the face of the product
- A topic where you have standing
Founder-led in 2026
Works extremely well, but it is an asset you build before the product, not during.

5 steps, in the order they ran them.

Be honest about the names Gumroad puts on its homepage. Vassallo went from about 151 Twitter followers to 24,000 over 14 months, then sold a course about doing exactly that. Steph Smith had The Hustle and a personal blog behind her. You cannot copy either on Monday. Copy Max Ulichney instead: MaxPacks are Procreate brush files. Buyers arrive because they own Procreate and want brushes, not because they know Max.
done whenA stranger can say what your file does from the thumbnail and title alone. If the pitch only lands once they know who you are, you are still selling an audience you do not have.

Discover is gated, not automatic. Your account needs payout settings filled, a $10 balance from genuine sales (Gumroad excludes you and your roommate buying it), then a risk review averaging three weeks. Each product separately needs one non-refunded sale, a category selected, and ratings switched on. So hand-sell the first copies anywhere you can reach people, purely to clear $10 and start that clock. Then tag the product on its Share tab with the words buyers type inside the host tool.
done whenThe date you cleared $10 and the date Discover approval actually landed, both written down. If weeks pass with nothing, check payout settings and risk verification before blaming the product.

Ratings are both a Discover requirement and its ranking fuel, so treat the first buyers as reviewers rather than revenue. Gumroad emails a review reminder five days after purchase if none was left, reviews are only accepted in the first year, and a refund strips the review with it. Pick early buyers you can actually reach, and answer every written review from the Respond button in your Sales dashboard.
done whenRatings per hundred sales, not total ratings. If barely anyone rates, your product page never asks and the five-day reminder is carrying it alone.

Set the price to "0+": a buyer can type 0 and still hand you their email, anyone who chooses to pay owes at least $0.99, and Gumroad takes no fee on free. Separately, people can follow your Gumroad profile without buying, and you can broadcast to followers only, customers only, or affiliates only. Vassallo ran this before his product existed, tweeting that people should put their email on his Gumroad page to hear first. You can stand up that page today with nothing to sell yet.
done whenEmails collected per week from the 0+ version, counted separately from paying buyers. A follower count that keeps moving in a week you shipped nothing is the asset forming.

Margin is your only budget. Gumroad takes a flat 30% on a sale it sends you from Discover against 10% on your own link, so those 20 points buy a stranger you never had to find. Affiliates cost more and travel further: you set anywhere from 1% to 75%, tracked on a 30-day cookie. Gumroad runs no affiliate marketplace, so you email the host tool's YouTubers and tutorial writers one at a time with a signup link. That is renting the audience the featured creators already owned.
done whenShare of revenue arriving through links you did not place yourself, meaning Discover plus affiliates. If that is near zero, you are still the entire distribution.
