How Descript got its users
Sponsored podcasters and YouTubers who use the tool to make the very content where they mention it. The demo is built in.
Read from signals. Consistent with what is publicly observable, but nobody confirmed it. Check before you quote it.
You could start this on Monday. No budget, no audience, no permission needed.
- Social proof you could never manufacture yourself
- A creative library for paid advertising
- A product you can demonstrate on screen
- A sourcing and contracting process
- Budget, or a product desirable enough to get it free
Creators and UGC in 2026
The most effective channel in consumer mobile today, and the most saturated at the top end.
Everything on this channel →The play
5 steps, in the order they ran them.
- 1
Start with people already making Descript content for free. Search YouTube and the Discord at discord.gg/descript for existing walkthroughs of Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words or Eye Contact, then message whoever made a decent one that nobody paid for. They know the workflow and already own raw footage. Your equivalent is anyone who posted a review, a tutorial or a workaround for your tool. Answer them before you write a single cold pitch to a big show.
done whenSearch your product name plus tutorial on YouTube, and check your Discord or support inbox. If nobody has ever made an unpaid walkthrough, the product is not yet visual enough to demo, and paying creators will not fix that.
- 2
Brief one named feature, never the product. The Descript format is a screen recording where the edit that produced the video happens on camera: delete a sentence from the transcript and the audio goes with it. Ask for the raw take first and the finished cut second, inside the same video. Send no script and no talking points. Pick the feature with a visible before and after, the way Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words have one, and let them use their own footage.
done whenName the one moment in your product that reads on screen in ten seconds with the sound off. If it needs a voiceover to explain what changed, you have a feature list, not a demo.
- 3
Hand over three things. A seat on a paid plan: descript.com/pricing watermarks free exports and caps them at 720p, so the upgrade is the real gift for anyone publishing. A starter project with their own media already imported. An affiliate link: descript.com/affiliate pays $25 per new subscriber, monthly by PayPal, no minimum sales, about a week to approve. No upfront fee, no exclusivity, and no right of review over their edit.
done whenCheck whether your free tier leaves a visible mark on anything published from it. If a free user's output carries nothing of yours, a seat buys you one mention, and the mention dies when the video scrolls past.
- 4
Build the rung above affiliate before you need it. descript.com/community lists Ambassadors, applied for through a Typeform, who start their own user groups, make learning content and answer questions in the Discord. The templates page carries a Submit your template button and a gallery, so creator work becomes part of the product. Give your best few a named role, a place to be featured, and a reason to keep posting after a payout stops.
done whenWrite down what a creator gets on their third video that they did not get on their first. If it is the same link and the same payout, expect them to stop at two.
- 5
Only buy a sponsor read once an unpaid one has converted, and buy that same format. The read that works for Descript is a host who edits the show inside it: mid-roll, screen shared, filler words stripped from the transcript live, then back to the episode. Pay per episode and keep their affiliate link running so you can compare the two. Ask for the vertical cut as well, made with Create Clips from that session, so one recording yields a long demo and shorts.
done whenCompare signups from one unpaid creator video against your cheapest paid read. If the unpaid one wins, your money belongs in more free seats and sharper briefs, not in ad slots.
