How buildspace got its users

Cohorts that turn every participant into a public advocate, amplified by a founder voice that was unmistakable on X.

Read from signals. Consistent with what is publicly observable, but nobody confirmed it. Check before you quote it.

Can you run this?
HARD

Reproducible, but it will cost you real money, real months, or a skill you may not have.

Community in 2026

Excellent for retention, slow for acquisition. It does not create the first wave, it amplifies it.

The play

5 steps, in the order they ran them.

  1. 1

Publish one weekend-sized build, not a course. buildspace's unit was a single shippable project (mint an NFT collection, build a DAO, a Solana app) with a starter repo on GitHub, free and open source under CC-BY-SA so anyone could fork it and reteach it. Each project opened with a live kickoff stream so the room had a start time instead of a signup form. Give the room something finishable tonight plus a moment when everyone starts together.

done whenA stranger finishes your build end to end without messaging you once.

  2. 2

Open one channel per project, not one server for everyone. In the buildspace Discord you landed in the room for the exact build you were on, alongside people two days ahead of you who answered because they had just been stuck there. Finishing granted alumni permissions and access to extra channels, including where companies posted web3 jobs. Do not let the general channel be the default: the smallest room is where help actually happens.

done whenNew members post their first question in a project-specific room within a day, not in general chat.

  3. 3

Make the proof of finishing something the builder owns. Complete buildspace's last lesson with a wallet linked and an NFT certificate landed in your wallet: viewable on OpenSea, tied to a Discord alumni role, sitting on your profile and not on buildspace's site. Farza's X account amplified this, but the receipt is the part that works with zero audience. A GitHub badge, a numbered cohort tag, or a page carrying their name does the same job.

done whenYou find people posting your completion receipt without tagging you or being asked.

  4. 4

Run demo day inside the community and give every builder their own URL. Nights and Weekends ended on Discord Stages, and each project got a public page at buildspace.so/s3/demoday/<project> with the builder's name and a say hi link pointing to their own Twitter. Prize money was decided by community vote. The page sends attention to the builder, not to you, which is exactly why they share it.

done whenParticipants share the page about them more often than they share your homepage.

  5. 5

Hold the group chat back on purpose. buildspace discouraged networking in the early weeks so people shipped before they schmoozed, and slipped Discord in later: no Slack, no LMS, no Circle. Farza's stated line was that they did not work hard to keep you there. Weekly challenges, a points leaderboard, Harry Potter style houses, and a Chrome extension counting down did the filtering instead of nagging.

done whenYour room is quiet in week one and loud by week four, not the reverse.
