How DataFast got its users
Positioned as the analytics that tells you which channel actually converts, sold directly to a maker audience the founder already had.
Read from signals. Consistent with what is publicly observable, but nobody confirmed it. Check before you quote it.
Reproducible, but it will cost you real money, real months, or a skill you may not have.
The edge you do not have: An existing audience of paying customers from previous products
- A launch that does not start from zero
- A direct relationship that survives algorithm changes
- 12 to 36 months of publishing before launch
- Accepting that you are the face of the product
- A topic where you have standing
Founder-led in 2026
Works extremely well, but it is an asset you build before the product, not during.

5 steps, in the order they ran them.
- 1
Refuse the category label. DataFast does not sell itself as a Google Analytics alternative: the site says 'Revenue-first analytics' and owns one named metric, Revenue per Visitor. The blog then carries a comparison page per incumbent: Google Analytics, Plausible, Matomo, Umami, Fathom, Simple Analytics, PostHog, Pirsch, BuzzHawk. Do both halves. Name the number your buyer cannot get from the tool they already pay for, then write the page for every tool they would otherwise pick.
done whenCan you write, in under ten words, the one number your buyer cannot pull from the tool they already pay for? If your answer is 'simpler' or 'better', you have no wedge yet.
- 2
Say the quiet part: the first DataFast customers were owned, not found. They were buyers of Marc's boilerplate ShipFast and his course CodeFast. ShipFast's docs page /docs/features/analytics tells them to paste the DataFast script into layout.js, with 30% off for members. That is the asset, and you do not have it.
done whenName the product your buyer installed last week whose docs have no decent page for your category. If nothing comes to mind, you do not know their stack well enough to get placed in it.
- 3
Ship one screen worth screenshotting. DataFast started as a weekend tool for Marc's own sites; the real-time 3D globe spread on X because makers posted their own traffic and tagged him. The rule: if it isn't good enough to screenshot, it isn't good enough. Build one view of the user's own data that survives cropping. Honest caveat: a screenshot only travels if someone with reach posts it.
done whenScreenshot one screen of your product and ask whether a user would post it unprompted. If it only makes sense with your caption attached, it will not travel.
- 4
Copy the proof format, not the reach. DataFast's homepage quotes peers with live domains, not job titles: gfluo.com, genppt.com, blink.new, shortmake.com, each naming something concrete like Revenue per Visitor or dropping PostHog. Early subscribers also keep their original price indefinitely, and a chat box sits on every page. Run all three: hand free access to 20 products the same size as your target, ask for one line that names the metric plus their domain, and lock their price in writing.
done whenDo your testimonials link to sites your prospect would read as their own size? Anonymous quotes and enterprise logos both fail this test for a solo buyer.
- 5
Rent the audience you do not have. DataFast pays 50% of all payments for 12 months, recurring, on a 60-day cookie through Rewardful, and offers a 14-day trial with no card. That combination is the one distribution play here that works from zero: you pay only after money lands, and the referred visitor can try without a decision. Recruit the people already writing 'best analytics for X' roundups and the boilerplate and template sellers whose customers need your category on day one.
done whenWould a creator in your niche earn more per referral from you than from the incumbent's one-off payout? If not, your rate is a press release, not an offer.
