How ClickUp got its users
Aggressive media buying on competitor queries, plus comparison pages against every alternative on the market.
Confirmed. The team said it publicly, or the signals leave no room for doubt.
Reproducible, but it will cost you real money, real months, or a skill you may not have.
- Speed and predictability
- Fast message testing you can reuse organically
- A known LTV and a short payback
- A test budget you can afford to lose
- A creative machine, not a campaign
Paid advertising in 2026
Available to everyone, so no edge in itself. You are not buying growth, you are buying speed on economics that already work.
Everything on this channel →The play
5 steps, in the order they ran them.
- 1
Write the landing page before you buy a click. Copy the shape of clickup.com/compare/asana-vs-clickup: an H1 that addresses the rival out loud (theirs reads "Hey Asana. Team projects are more than task lists."), then three flat sentences naming what breaks in their tool, then a two-column checkmark table. One page per rival you genuinely beat. Publish it and let it sit on organic traffic for a few weeks before any spend.
done whenYou can fill your own two-column table without a single row that is really a no dressed as "Limited". If three checkmarks are aspirational, the page converts traffic you will refund later.
- 2
Set the retention gate before spending. ClickUp's math works because the CTA is "Get started. It's FREE" with no credit card and billing is per seat, so one signup can become a paying team. Check the free signups you already have who came off a rival tool: still opening the product in week four, and did any invite a coworker? If they flatline in week one, ads only buy you a churn curve at rival-keyword prices.
done whenYour own week-four cohort: a real share of rival-switchers still active, and at least one second seat invited per surviving workspace. If nearly every account stays solo, hold the budget.
- 3
Buy Google Search, exact match, one ad group per rival, and start on the problem-aware tail rather than the bare trademark: "asana alternative", "monday.com too expensive", "jira for small teams". Those clicks cost less and the searcher is already mid-migration. You cannot put a rival name in the ad headline anyway, which is why ClickUp saves it for the H1 after the click.
done whenYour search terms report shows tail queries converting to signup cheaper than the naked brand term. If the bare trademark is your only converter, your page is not different enough to sell.
- 4
Make switching cost the creative angle, not features. clickup.com/import promises "Move away from your outdated PM software, in less than 60 seconds. For free." and lists Asana, Monday, Jira, Trello, Notion, Wrike and CSV behind a Start Importing button. Build the importer for the one rival you bid on, then point the ad at that page. The searcher is pricing the move, not your feature list.
done whenTime your own import end to end using a real export file from that rival. If it needs a support ticket or a manual cleanup pass, fix the importer before you pay for the click.
- 5
Judge each ad group on seats per workspace at 60 days, never on signups: per-seat pricing plus a paid AI add-on like ClickUp's Brain means one workspace can be worth many clicks. Then widen the roster the way clickup.com/compare does, out from Monday and Asana to Sunsama and Akiflow, one rival at a time, only when you can fill the table honestly. Paste the winning ad copy into that page H1 so organic keeps the lesson after you stop paying.
done whenEvery live ad group has produced at least one workspace that grew past its first seat. Groups that only ever make solo accounts get cut before you add the next rival name.
