Excellent for retention, slow for acquisition. It does not create the first wave, it amplifies it.

The play

5 steps, in the order they ran them.

  1. 1

Post it as a Show HN the way nchudleigh did in August 2023: built out of frustration with macOS dictation, whisper.cpp under the hood, base and small models free with no signup at all. Then live in the thread. He answered every pricing objection to the $65 a year plan, asked one objector flat out what would you pay for it, then added a $165 lifetime license mid-thread and pasted the checkout link in each reply.

done whenA hostile stranger can test your main claim in a minute with no account. If the free path needs a signup, the thread argues about the signup instead of the product.

  2. 2

Run your own Discord around the artifact your power users trade, not around support. Superwhisper's is the prompt-hacking channel, where people post the custom mode prompts they wrote, since the app lets anyone build a mode with its own AI instructions. The official X account then points at that channel by name and reposts the workflows users invented in it.

done whenYou can name the one artifact your users would copy from each other. If you cannot, the Discord becomes a support queue and goes quiet.

  3. 3

Put a Community Projects page inside your docs and credit other people's repos by name: macrowhisper by ognistik, his Alfred workflow, crarau's recording analysis tool, mackid1993's prompt collection. Superwhisper hands its own docs traffic to unpaid builders. It works because the app drops each recording into a folder anyone can watch, so there is a hook to build on.

done whenYour product writes a file, folder or state an outsider can watch or script against without you shipping an API.

  4. 4

Get listed in someone else's catalog instead of posting in their forum. The Superwhisper Raycast extension sits at raycast.com/nchudleigh/superwhisper, submitted as a pull request to raycast/extensions and reviewed by Raycast staff. It does start recording, change mode, search history, copy last transcript. Reviewers approved a paid app's extension because it shipped real commands, not a link home.

done whenYour product exposes at least one action a launcher or extension can call in a single command, and that action is useful on its own.

  5. 5

Ship one small repo per host tool your users already sit in: superwhisper-claude-code, superwhisper-codex, opencode-superwhisper, pi-superwhisper. The Claude Code one installs with claude plugin marketplace add superultrainc/superwhisper-claude-code and fires a hook when the agent finishes a task, so the user answers by voice. The plugin is the pitch, placed at the exact second someone has to type.

done whenYou can name the exact moment inside another tool's flow where your product is the obvious next action, with no app switch to reach it.
