How Honey got its users
Years of massive YouTube sponsorship on an immediate savings promise that demonstrates itself on screen.
Confirmed. The team said it publicly, or the signals leave no room for doubt.
Reproducible, but it will cost you real money, real months, or a skill you may not have.
The edge you do not have: Affiliate economics that financed an acquisition cost few models can support
- Social proof you could never manufacture yourself
- A creative library for paid advertising
- A product you can demonstrate on screen
- A sourcing and contracting process
- Budget, or a product desirable enough to get it free
Creators and UGC in 2026
The most effective channel in consumer mobile today, and the most saturated at the top end.
Everything on this channel →The play
5 steps, in the order they ran them.
- 1
Find your Apply Coupons moment. Honey's channel rests on one on-screen beat: the popup shows at checkout, the creator clicks "Apply Coupons", codes cycle, the cart total falls. Nothing is argued, it just happens while the camera is rolling. Before you contact anyone, cut that beat yourself as a 20 to 30 second screen capture. If your product cannot visibly win without a voiceover explaining why it won, you do not have a creator channel yet, you have a feature to build.
done whenYou hand a silent 20 second screen capture to someone outside the team and they describe what the product just did, with no narration from you.
- 2
Issue a slug per creator the way Honey does. joinhoney.com/mkbhd 302s to a tracked /r/ path whose campaign string carries the creator name, the vertical and a creative variant, with utm_source=infl and utm_medium=vid, landing on get.joinhoney.com: no nav, no pricing, one button reading "Add to Chrome - It's Free". An invented slug 404s, so every path is issued by hand. Copy that exactly: hand-issued path, one stripped variant page per creator.
done whenHitting /theirname on your own domain issues a tracked path and lands on a page with one button and no nav, while an unissued slug returns 404.
- 3
Recruit creators whose footage already contains your moment. Honey went after people filming themselves shopping, unboxing and building, so a checkout screen was in frame regardless. List creators whose display your product would appear on anyway, smallest first, the ones running no sponsor at all. With no budget, offer lifetime access to the paid tier plus a bounty per install counted off their own slug, instead of a flat fee you cannot cover.
done whenYour recruiting list only holds creators whose existing videos already show the surface your product runs on, and you can cite a timestamp for each one.
- 4
Send a one page brief, never a script. Honey reads land because the creator uses a real cart, a real purchase they wanted, in their own voice, with no studio b-roll and no actor. Ask for exactly three things: keep the screen recording running through the beat, say the slug out loud, put it in the description and the pinned comment. Hand over a full account so the demo is the real product. Everything else, including the joke, is theirs.
done whenCreators send back footage of their own real work rather than a rehearsed read, and the slug is spoken in the video as well as written under it.
- 5
Read each slug weekly and re-cut what works. Per-creator paths make installs unambiguous, so buy usage rights on the clips that convert and keep them live as evergreen variant pages, as Honey does. Then audit what your product does to the creator's own income while it runs: Honey's extension overwrote the affiliate cookies of the creators promoting it, and the people who built the channel became the ones suing over it.
done whenYou can name which slugs produced installs this week, and state precisely what your product does to a creator's own links or revenue while running.
