How Dropbox got its users

Two-sided referral paid in storage, plus a demo video on Digg at exactly the right moment. That window is closed.

Confirmed. The team said it publicly, or the signals leave no room for doubt.

The play

5 steps, in the order they ran them.

  1. 1

Make your share action produce a URL on your domain, never a file. In Dropbox nothing is attached: Share gives you a dropbox.com link, and the recipient gets a preview page in their browser with no account and no install. Dropbox Transfer is built the same way, its help page states the recipient does not need an account to access or download a transfer. Every deliverable that leaves your product as an email attachment is a delivery your brand never touched.

done whenPaste your product's main share link into a private browsing window with no session. If the content renders, you have reach. If you hit a login screen, every recipient you have ever sent to was a wasted impression.

  2. 2

Put the account wall between looking and doing, not before looking. Dropbox ships two link types from the same menu, Link for viewing and Link for editing, and its help page says the person must have an account and be logged in to view or edit shared content, while a view-only link works without one. The recipient creates an account because the task they were handed (edit, comment, join the folder) sits on the other side, not because a banner asked. Then make that account cost them: joining a shared folder counts the folder's full size against the quota of every member, and Basic starts at 2 GB, so the sender's files eat the recipient's free plan.

done whenWrite out every action a recipient can take on your shared page and mark each one free-and-anonymous or account-required. If none require an account, nothing converts. If viewing requires one, nothing spreads. If joining costs the recipient nothing out of their own allowance, you have created a free user with no reason to ever pay.

  3. 3

Ship the link that points inward too. A Dropbox file request is a page a non-user opens to upload into your folder, available on every plan including free, no account needed to send. Dropbox's own note: collected files take up space in your account, capped at 2 GB per file on Basic, Plus and Family. Build the same reverse link so your user can ask a stranger to produce something instead of only sending content, and bill the cost of fulfilling it to the user who sent the request.

done whenCount your link types: outbound (my user sends content) against inbound (my user asks a non-user to produce something). If inbound is zero, half your surface does not exist, and inbound links reach a different crowd entirely: clients, contributors, applicants, not just teammates.

  4. 4

Stamp the recipient page on the free tier and sell the removal. Custom logos and backgrounds on a Transfer download page are listed for Standard, Professional, Essentials, Business, Business Plus, Advanced and Enterprise, so a free sender's download page arrives wearing Dropbox's own look, and the pricing table sells 'Brand your files to share' as a paid line. Copy that structure: the page a free user's recipient lands on carries your name and a sign-up path, and taking your mark off is a billed feature.

done whenScreenshot the page a recipient sees when a FREE user of yours shares something. If your product name and a way to sign up are not on it, your free tier is spending your bandwidth and returning nothing. If your paid tier removes branding at no charge, you gave the ad space away.

  5. 5

Pay both sides of the referral in the resource that runs out, and release it only after the invitee has stuck. Basic earns 500 MB per referral up to 16 GB, Plus, Family and Professional earn 1 GB up to 32 GB, and the friend who signs up also gets 500 MB. The payout is not triggered by signup: the referral dashboard shows Waiting for install, then Waiting for email verification, then Completed, so the storage lands only once the invitee installed the desktop app and verified their email.

done whenName the unit you would pay a referral in. If the only answer is cash or a discount, you have no scarce resource inside your product and the program will attract people who came for the money. Then check your payout trigger: if it fires at signup instead of at first real use, expect the invited accounts to be dead on arrival.
