How Black Magic got its users
The analytics widget sits inside X itself, so every user of the tool is showing it to other creators while they work.
Confirmed. The team said it publicly, or the signals leave no room for doubt.
You could start this on Monday. No budget, no audience, no permission needed.
- An acquisition cost that trends toward zero
- Growth that survives you cutting the budget
- A moment where the user has a selfish reason to share
- Zero friction for the recipient
- A product that is multiplayer by nature

The best channel when it exists. But it is decided in product design, not in marketing.
Everything on this channel →The play
5 steps, in the order they ran them.
- 1
Find the asset your users already show to strangers daily, and take over rendering it. Black Magic did not add a share button: it noticed that every X creator has a header image and a profile picture that load for every single visitor, and it wrote itself into both, via the Real-time Banner and the profile progress bar. Find your equivalent surface (a booking page header, a repo README, an email signature, a storefront banner) and ship a feature that regenerates it on a schedule after a one-time setup, so it keeps carrying you with zero further effort from the user.
done whenYou can name one specific asset and say who loads it, in the form 'people who are not our customers see this image every time they open our user's profile'. If your best answer is 'they could take a screenshot', you have not found the asset yet.
- 2
Put your mark inside that rendering, and sell only its removal. Black Magic's plan comparison has a literal row called 'Remove watermark' under Real-time Banner, which means free users keep publishing a header with the tool's name in it across X. Treat the free tier as the distribution budget rather than a loss: every free account is a permanent placement on a profile you do not own and did not pay for.
done whenYour own pricing page has a row that says remove watermark, and you can count how many live outputs in the wild are currently stamped with your name. If your free tier ships clean output, you are paying for hosting and getting no reach back.

Make the artifact display other people, so named strangers come to look at it. The banner features the profile pictures of accounts that just followed, and the emoji thrown in by people who just replied. Those specific people now have a personal reason to open that profile and study the banner, which is exactly where your name sits. Build your version of 'your face is in this': the reviewer's avatar on the generated page, the referrer's handle on the receipt, the contributor's name on the export.
done whenYou can point to at least one visitor this week who opened your artifact because they were in it, identified by referrer or because they told you, not anonymous traffic.
- 4
Pre-build a public page for people who are not customers, at a URL anyone can guess, from public data only. blackmagic.so/glance/<handle> resolves for handles that never signed up, described on the page as studying Twitter profiles 'based on public activities'. Google indexed one page per handle, titled 'Glance, Study @handle Twitter Analytics'. That lets a user send a non-user their own numbers, and lets a stranger searching their own handle land on you. Gate the daily view count behind sign-in if you must, never the first look.
done whenIn a logged-out browser, type a stranger's public identifier into your own URL pattern and get a real page with real data. Then search that identifier and check whether your page comes back. If either fails, that page is not an acquisition surface.
- 5
Cut the path from seeing it to owning it down to one authorization. The call to action on the public Glance page is not a demo request, it is 'Too lazy to type? Install the Browser Extension now!', and account creation is Sign in with Twitter, using the account the visitor is already logged into. There is no password, no card and no email confirmation sitting between the moment someone envies a banner and the moment their own is live.
done whenOpen your public artifact in a fresh browser and time yourself to a working version of your own. If it takes more than a couple of minutes, or asks for a card or an email confirmation, you are losing people at the exact point where intent is highest.
